Gum for dentures

Choose a sugar-free gum from trusted brands and series to minimize sticking and staining. Consider texture (soft for easier chewing), flavor variety, and how the gum might interact with your denture material. Look for clear labeling from brands like Wrigley’s, Orbit, Extra, or Trident that indicates a sugar-free option. Always follow your dentist’s guidance and avoid anything that leaves residues or feels overly sticky.

The sweetener type is the most complex attribute because it affects taste, saliva production, and oral comfort. Sugar-free gums often use xylitol, sorbitol, or maltitol; xylitol, in particular, can help maintain saliva flow and reduce bacteria. Be mindful that some sugar alcohols may cause digestive upset if eaten in large amounts. Choose reputable brands and series that clearly label their sweeteners to compare options safely.

Yes, a first-time denture wearer should start with mild, non-sticky sugar-free gum and use it sparingly to avoid irritation. A regular user can opt for longer-lasting flavors and still choose sugar-free options, as long as the gum remains non-sticky and easy to remove from the denture. Always monitor how chewing affects comfort and fit and adjust accordingly.

Chew gum in moderation and rinse your mouth after chewing. Clean your denture daily with an appropriate cleaner and avoid colorful gums that could stain. When not wearing the denture, store it in clean water or a denture-safe container. If chewing causes irritation or affects fit, consult your dentist promptly.
