Cardiac
arrest in children is an unfortunate and traumatic event..an event that
an estimated 16,000 American children suffer each year.
Tragically, only 5 to 10% of patients survive out‐of‐hospital arrests.
Of those survivors, many suffer severe neurological problems. Survival
statistics for pediatric cardiac arrests occurring in the hospital are
better, with an estimated 27% of patients surviving to discharge and 65%
of them leaving with good neurological outcomes.
Some pediatric cardiac arrests are sudden and unexpected, especially those that occur outside the hospital. Warning signs can be absent or go unrecognized. Pediatric arrests often occur as a complication or progression of respiratory failure, circulatory shock, or both.
Although the cause may
vary, the goal is the same: immediately reestablish effective cardiac
output and deliver oxygen to tissues with high‐quality cardiopulmonary
resuscitation (CPR).
By being able to deliver an immediate shock using the Philips Onsite
Defibrillator with a M5072A Child pads you are improving the odds of a
positive outcome.
These
pads work with the Philips HeartStart OnSite AED defibrillator to give
voice instructions appropriate for a pediatric (child) patient.
The HeartStart child pads cartridge automatically reduces the energy of
its shock from an adult dose of 150 Joules to a child appropriate dose
of 50 Joules.
Children
under 8 years of age or weighing less than 55 pounds (25 kg), including
infants, should be treated using the HeartStart Infant/Child SMART Pads cartridge, if available.
For
easier identification and faster response time during a cardiac
emergency, the Philips Pads cartridge is marked with the appropriate
patient weight and a teddy bear icon.
How to Install the M5072A HeartStart OnSite Child SMART Pads Cartridge
