Wheat Germ Oil Utilization

Wheat-germ oil (WGO) is a specialty product. Unlike commodity oils such as soybean and canola oils, which are mainly used for their heat-transfer properties during cooking and for providing a pleasant mouth feel in salad dressings, WGO is used for its nutritional value, specifically for its high vitamin-E content. Applications of WGO range from cosmetics, toiletries, pharmaceuticals, and health foods to dietary supplements.

WGO is marketed as a dietary supplement in bottles or in capsules. Reports show that many trainers recommend WGO as a dietary supplement for athletes to enhance endurance and physical fitness (Poiletman & Miller, 1968). This effect was attributed to WGO components called policosanols. WGO is used in food and feed formulations, and it is sometimes mixed with lecithin and cod-liver oil. Feed applications of WGO include diet supplements for farm animals, racehorses, pets, and mink (Kahlon, 1989). WGO is an important source of commercial natural vitamin E.

WGO is used at 0.1–50% concentrations in cosmetic formulations based on the application. Skin moisturizers may contain up to 50% of WGO (Elder, 1980). Betaine from wheat germ is an emulsifier used in cosmetic products for its viscosity building and conditioning properties (Schoenberg, 1985). Amidoamine lactate, sulfosuccinate, amphodiacetate, and amidopropylamine oxide are other surfactants derived from WGO and used in cosmetics, depending on the pH and ingredients in the formulations. WGO is also a potent insect attractant and is used for insect control. The volatile components of WGO are responsible for the aggregation activity of Trogoderma glabrum larvae, which is a stored-product pest (Nara et al., 1981). Medium-chain (C13–C16) saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons, branched hexylbenzene, octanoic acid, gamma-nonalactone, substituted naphthalenes, and cyclic branched ketones are the WGO components which function as insect attractants
